Viking Bay

The heart of Broadstairs — a horseshoe of soft sand below the town, with the old harbour at one end, beach huts at the back and everything a beach day needs a few steps away. The easiest family beach near Botany Bay Beach House.

Viking Bay is the beach most people picture when they think of Broadstairs: a sheltered crescent of sand cupped by the town, with the promenade and the cafes looking down on it, striped beach huts at the back and a real working harbour at one end. It is the busy one, and the easy one — everything you need is right there.

The town beach

What makes Viking Bay different from the chalk coves to the north is that the town comes right down to it. There is sand, but there is also ice cream, deckchairs, a bandstand, the harbour, and a row of cafés and pubs along the promenade above — including an old-fashioned ice cream parlour that has looked over the bay since the 1930s. The beach is gently shelving and lifeguarded in summer, which makes it the most reassuring spot for young children.

Broadstairs wears its Dickens connection openly here. The writer spent his summers in the town for years, and Bleak House stands on the cliff above the bay. The annual Folk Week in August fills the bandstand and the seafront with music.

Where it is and how to get there

Viking Bay is in the centre of Broadstairs, about ten minutes from Botany Bay Beach House by car, or a longer walk or cycle south along the clifftop on the Viking Coastal Trail. Broadstairs railway station is a few minutes' walk away. Parking is in the town car parks rather than at the beach itself; on a warm day, arriving early or coming on foot saves the search.

Dogs

No dogs in summer

Viking Bay has the strictest dog rule of the local beaches. Dogs are not allowed on the beach at all between 1 May and 30 September — not even early or late in the day. Outside those dates dogs are welcome, and on the promenade they must be on a lead all year. In summer, take the dog to Kingsgate Bay instead, where they are welcome year round.

What it's good for

Easy family days. Lifeguards, gentle sand and everything within reach — the least effort of any beach near the house.

A proper seaside day. Ice cream, the harbour, deckchairs and the bandstand: the traditional Broadstairs experience.
