Joss Bay catches the swell that the other Thanet beaches miss. It is the one beach on this coast with a genuine surf culture, an open bay facing the right way to pick up clean waves, and it is still a wide, safe, lifeguarded family beach when the sea is flat. It holds a Blue Flag for 2026.
Surfing and the surf school
The waves at Joss Bay break gently over a sandbar, which is exactly what beginners want — forgiving, slow-breaking, and a long way from the dumping shore-break of a steeper beach. Joss Bay Surf School has run lessons here since 1998, with board and wetsuit hire and coaching for all ages. It is one of the best places in the south-east to stand up on a board for the first time. Conditions are best with a bit of wind and swell, often in autumn and winter, but lessons run through the warmer months too.
Just south of the bay stands the North Foreland Lighthouse, the white tower marking the headland. It was the last manned lighthouse in the United Kingdom before it was automated, and the clifftop around it makes a good short walk.
Where it is and how to get there
Joss Bay is south of Kingsgate, between the village and the North Foreland. From Botany Bay Beach House it is roughly a ten-minute walk along the clifftop, or a couple of minutes by car. There is a pay-and-display car park at the top of the bay, with a seasonal kiosk and the surf school based beside it. The bay sits on the Viking Coastal Trail, so it is easy to reach on foot or by bike.
Tides and safety
Joss Bay is a broad, open beach with a lot of sand at low tide, and it is more forgiving than the enclosed coves nearby — but it is still tidal, and the water is cold for most of the year. RNLI lifeguards patrol the bay through the summer season, typically late May to early September; if you are surfing or swimming, stay between the flags when they are flying. Outside the season there is no cover. A wetsuit is sensible for any real time in the water, even in August.

Dogs
As at Botany Bay, dogs are not allowed on Joss Bay between 10am and 6pm from 1 May to 30 September under Thanet District Council's Public Spaces Protection Order. Before 10am, after 6pm, and from October through April, dogs are welcome on the sand. On the promenade above, dogs must be on a lead all year. For a summer-daytime dog walk, nearby Kingsgate Bay has the more relaxed rules.
What it's good for
Learning to surf. The most beginner-friendly waves on the coast, with an established school on the sand.
Families. Lifeguarded, plenty of room, and a safe swim when the sea is calm.
Walks. The clifftop to the North Foreland lighthouse and on towards Broadstairs is one of the best stretches of the Viking Coastal Trail.
